magAssist partners with top universities to help nurture young talents

Starting in 2021, magAssist has been working as a corporate partner with MYMI (Monash Young Medical Innovators) for Heart Hackathon, the world's first global and year-long TAH (Total Artificial Heart) competition. magAssist is honored to be a part in supporting and cultivating young talents, as well as promoting the rapid and sustainable development of the industry.

Under the leadership of Dr. Shaun Gregory, an Australian medical engineering expert, and with the support of ISMCS (International Society of Mechanical Circulatory Support), Heart Hackathon was officially launched at the 2022 EUMS-ISMCS conference. This competition is dedicated to combining innovative enterprise technologies with academic research findings, and providing a platform for students to apply their research results into practical innovation in the field of artificial heart. Student-led teams will design prototypes; evaluate their entire artificial heart, and compete against teams from all over the world. With these purposes in mind, Heart Hackathon aims to serve as a bridge among industries, researchers, and young talents. This competition will last for one year, and the results will be presented at the 2023 ISMCS conference.

Dr. Thomas George Logan, Chief Scientist and Chief Engineer of magAssist, was also invited to give a speech to the attending students at Heart Hackathon's first webinar. He spoke on the entrepreneurial journey of magAssist, including its mission, innovative products, core technologies, and insights into the whole medical industry.

In addition to partnering with Heart Hackathon, magAssist is also connecting young talents in the industrial design field through school-enterprise partnerships with Monash Suzhou. An industrial design competition was held in early 2022. A total of 14 groups of design works were registered for the competition. After the evaluation by a panel of judges composed of teachers from magAssist and Industrial Design Department at University, 4 groups of design works were shortlisted for the grand final. The grand final was held at magAssist in late June.

Through this competition, young talents were provided with the opportunity to apply their school knowledge and theories to practical designs. As young talents ascend the ladder in the global technology market, they will become the fundamental cornerstone of Artificial Heart. This partnership hopes that students can experience the innovative dynamics of start-up companies, and gain in-depth knowledge of the medical device industry. 

One question we frequently received from students throughout projects was "What is magAssist looking for in 'Assistars' (Note: Assistars is a name for magAssist's employees) ?"
